Hot Apple Cider Recipe (Stovetop, Slow Cooker & Instant Pot Instructions) (1)

Whether it’s wielding icicle lightsabers at their grandparents or plunging fully clothed into the ocean in December, my kids seem determined to enjoy each year’s winter play opportunities to the fullest. When they come in to warm up I usually serve herbal tea, but sometimes I surprise them with this easy hot apple cider recipe. Like my homemade hot chocolate, it’s a rare treat, but it’s one that comes with a bonus. It serves as the base for hot buttered rum. 🙂

Making apple cider from scratch is so much easier than you might think. You don’t even need to core the apples – just cut them into four slices, add some water, spices and a few orange slices if you have them – then simmer until your whole house smells delicious and your family starts wandering into the kitchen to see what’s going on.

Oh, and one quick note: I often blend this hot apple cider with a little butter to make it creamy. Basically, it’s buttered rum without the rum, which tastes amazing and helps keep my kids blood sugar stable while they sip.

If you want to try it you’ll find details in the recipe, but first you might be wondering . . .

What are the best apples for making hot cider?

There are a lot of opinions on this subject. Personally, I’ve tried using all sweet apples (honeycrisp, gala, fuji, etc.) and a mix of sweet and tart like granny smith. I like the mix, but ultimately it’s the spices that really make the cider shine and both are absolutely delicious.

Ingredients

  • 5 apples
  • 4 cups water
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2-3 star anise
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 4 cardamom pods (optional)
  • 4 whole allspice (optional)
  • 1-2 slices of orange (optional)
  • 4-8 tbsp butter (optional)

Instructions

Stovetop Instructions

  • Quarter the apples (no need to seed or core them) and place them in a medium pot.

  • Add the spices, water andorange slices(if you're adding them), then cover the pot and bring the water to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for two hours. The water may not cover all the apples at first – that's okay. As they release their liquid and become softer, just mash them down using apotato masher.

  • When the cider is ready, use afine meshstrainerorcheeseclothto separate the liquid from the apples, orange slicesand spices.

  • Check for sweetness. If needed, add coconut sugar or maple syrup in 1 tablespoon increments until it reaches the sweetness level you prefer.

  • Optional Step: Blend with butter if desired. I usually just pour the apple cider back in the pot, add the butter, and blend with an immersion blender, but you could pour the cider/butter into a traditional blender and mix it up that way, too.

  • Serve warm withcinnamon sticks, star anise, or freshcranberriesfor garnish if desired.

Slow Cooker Instructions

  • Place apples, spices, water andorange slices(if using) in aslow cooker.

  • Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.

I usually just pour the apple cider back into theslow cooker, add butter, and use an immersion blender to blend. Another option is to pour the cider and abutter into a blender and mix it up that way. Serve warm withcinnamon sticks, star anise, or freshcranberriesfor garnish if desired.

  • Serve warm withcinnamon sticks, star anise, or freshcranberriesfor garnish if desired.

Instant Pot Instructions

  • Place the apples, spices, water andorange slices(if using) in anInstant Pot.

  • Close the pressure cooker lid, set the valve to the "seal" position, and cook on high pressure for 30 minutes.

  • After 30 minutes, slowly turn the pressure release valve to begin venting pressurized steam. Once the valve has finished releasing steam, twist and turn the lid open.

  • Use afine meshstrainerorcheeseclothto separate the liquid from the apples, orange slicesand spices.

  • Taste and check the sweetness. If you'd like it to be a little sweeter, add 1 tablespoon of coconut sugar or maple syrup. Taste again and add more if needed.

  • Optional Step: Blend with butter if desired. After straining out the apples spices I usually pour the apple cider back in theInstant Pot, add the butter, and blend with an immersion blender, but you could pour the cider and butter into a traditional blender and mix it up that way, too.

  • Serve warm withcinnamon sticks, star anise, or freshcranberriesfor garnish if desired.

FAQs

How long does it take to heat up cider in a crock pot? ›

Steps to Make It

Cover the crockpot and cook on low, stirring occasionally, for 2 to 3 hours. Serve in mugs, garnished with whole star anise, cinnamon sticks, orange slices, and/or apple slices, if desired, and enjoy.

Can you heat up cider on the stove? ›

Place the saucepan over moderate heat and cook until cider is very hot but not boiling, about 5 to 10 minutes. Remove cider from the heat. Discard the spice bundle. Ladle cider into big cups or mugs, adding a fresh cinnamon stick to each serving if desired.

Do I vent the Instant Pot when slow cooking? ›

Another tip, taken from an Instant Pot Facebook group, is to open the valve all the way on your Instant Pot lid when slow cooking. This allows some moisture and steam to release and keeps the Instant Pot from overcooking your slow cooker recipes.

How do you know when cider is done brewing? ›

If the bubbles have stopped passing through the airlock, your cider may have finished fermenting. Use hydrometer to measure the Specific Gravity – if the specific gravity is 1.000 or below the fermentation will have finished.

What is the best temperature for making cider? ›

Recommended fermentation temperature is 68 to 72 °F (20 to 22 °C). Fermenting at higher temperatures will produce more esters, potentially developing a strongly aromatic cider.

Is hot apple cider good for you? ›

The polyphenols in the cider provide health benefits. While cider might not have the same concentration of polyphenols that whole apples have, these antioxidants can help to improve your health and lower your odds of certain conditions such as inflammation and cancer.

Can you just heat up cider? ›

1. Combine apple juice or apple cider with cloves and cinnamon in a microwaveable mug, cup or glass. 2. Heat in the microwave oven, uncovered, for 2 to 3 minutes.

What alcohol to mix with apple cider? ›

Dark liquors like bourbon (my pick) or dark rum are traditional, but they are by no means the only option. Vodka pairs well with apple cider and is a good light option. You can even let guests each pick their own.

Can I open an Instant Pot lid while slow cooking? ›

No problem. Unlike with other Instant Pot recipes, where it's dangerous to remove the lid, you're more than welcome to take off the lid as you slow cook in the Instant Pot.

Why not to use Instant Pot as slow cooker? ›

If you are interested primarily in slow cooking, you should buy a dedicated slow cooker. They're more reliable with a range of slow-cooker recipes than an Instant Pot. We found Instant Pot multicookers specifically could not successfully slow-cook dense, high-volume recipes such as beef stew or pot roast.

Can you leave an Instant Pot on Slow Cook overnight? ›

If you are slow cooking in the Instant Pot, you should be able to leave your dish cooking overnight for as long as the recipe dictates. Anything that calls for 8 hours cooking time should be sufficient as long as you make sure you're up in time to take it out of the slow cooker once it's finished.

How long to heat cider in a crock pot reddit? ›

Set on low for 4 hours and enjoy.

How do you heat cold apple cider? ›

1. Combine apple juice or apple cider with cloves and cinnamon in a microwaveable mug, cup or glass. 2. Heat in the microwave oven, uncovered, for 2 to 3 minutes.

Can hard cider be warmed up? ›

Can you just heat up apple cider? Yes, you could absolutely choose a hard, alcoholic cider for this recipe. Add the spices and chai teabags, and warm gently.

How do you heat cider to stop fermentation? ›

An alternate method to stop re-fermentation is to heat to 120ºF (stir constantly) and cool. Sweeten to taste with sugar, honey, apple juice or frozen apple juice concentrate prior to bottling. Six ounces of sugar per gallon will result in a medium sweet cider.
