The Easiest Recipe for Bisquick Dumplings!

Bisquick mix is a staple in my pantry. It’s such a great shortcut to use for many delicious Bisquick recipes for things like pancakes, biscuits, sausage balls, impossible quiche, pizza dough, and dumplings.

On a cold night there is nothing like a big bowl of Bisquick chicken and dumplings. The delicious combination of hot stew and dumplings is out of this world. It’s so warm and hearty, not to mention easy to make.

Today we are focusing on the dumplings. These pillowy, fluffy dumplings are an amazing addition to things like chicken stew, beef stew, soups and more.

Bisquick Dumpling Recipe Ingredients

Only two ingredients needed for these delicious, tender and fluffy dumplings.

Bisquick – Bisquick is a premade baking mix that has leavening, flour, salt and fat.

Milk – I recommend whole milk for the fluffiest dumplings but you can substitute with 2%, almond milk, soy milk or even water.

How to Make Dumplings with Bisquick

This classic recipe is what you will find on the Bisquick box. Simply mix and drop into your favorite stew or soup.

  1. Add Bisquick and milk to a bowl. Gently stir until ingredients just come together until a soft dough forms.
  2. Use a tablespoon or small cookie scoop to drop dough into a lightly simmering broth. Be sure not to stir.
  3. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes and then cover and cook another 10 minutes.

Tips for Dumplings with Bisquick

Try using fresh Bisquick mix for the fluffiest dumplings. Older mix might not rise properly.

The most important tip is not to over mix the dough. This can cause chewy or tough dumplings. Stir ingredients just until combined.

Another tip is to let the dough sit for 3-4 minutes before dropping in the hot soup. Sitting will allow the dough to rise.

Don’t stir the dumplings while they are cooking.

If you would like to make Bisquick dumplings without milk, substitute with almond milk, soy milk or water.

To make gluten-free dumplings, use Gluten-Free Bisquick.

Add a little extra flavor by adding seasonings to the dumpling mixture. Salt, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, parsley, and chives are great to try. You can also add in a little grated Parmesan or cheddar cheese.

These dumplings can even be used for dessert. Try dropping into a pot of simmering fruit like cherries, apples, and peaches. Top the dumplings with a pinch of cinnamon and sugar for added sweetness.

They might have been cooked too long. Check on them through the cooking process and remove from heat once they are cooked through.

The dumplings didn’t get cooked long enough. You can test them by sticking a toothpick in the center. If it comes out clean, they are done cooking. If it’s still wet, cook a little longer.

What is the secret to good dumplings?

The key to good dumplings is to not overmix the dough. Overmixing will cause them to become tough.

Do you cook dumplings with lid on or lid off?

Both on and off. We start off by cooking these dumplings uncovered with the lid off. After 10 minutes, cover with the lid and continue cooking.

To check if the dumplings are done, carefully remove one and cut it open. If it’s fluffy on the inside it’s done cooking. If it’s still doughy, continue cooking.

How to store Bisquick Dumplings

Store any leftovers in a container in the refrigerator. This will only last 1-2 days. Reheat in the microwave or in a saucepan over medium heat. The dumplings will still be fine to eat but may be a little softer after reheating.

I would not recommend freezing dumplings because it will loose it’s texture. They are fast to prepare and are much better fresh.

FAQs

Why are my Bisquick dumplings not fluffy? ›

To make biscuit dumplings that are fluffy it's important to not over-mix the dough. Stop mixing once a soft dough forms. If you mix the dough too long, it will create dense and chewy dumplings that will take too long to cook all the way through.

How to keep Bisquick dumplings from falling apart? ›

Once you drop the biscuit dough into the pot, be sure that you do not stir the dumplings and do not let the simmer go too fast. If you bring the broth to a rolling boil or fast simmer, the dumplings may dissolve or fall apart.

Do you cook dumplings covered or uncovered? ›

The second secret to making really good dumplings is to keep the lid closed while the dumplings cook. With the soup simmering over a low flame and the dumpling dough ready, you'll drop spoonfuls of the dough onto the surface of the simmering broth, then cover the pot with a lid.

Why do my dumplings come out hard? ›

Overworking the mixture, thus having heavy dumplings is a common mistake people make. Dumplings need very gentle handling, so mix only until the ingredients are just combined, and if your recipe involves rolling them out with extra flour, avoid using too much.

How do you make dumplings thicker? ›

Use Cornstarch to Thicken Chicken and Dumplings

To give that a little thicker texture we're going to add 1 cup of cool water to 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and stir it up well. Make sure the soup is brought back to a good boil and go ahead and stir in the cornstarch mixture.

Why are my dumplings puffing up? ›

As America's Test Kitchen notes, before you seal the edges of the wrapper together, you're supposed to "press out any extra air." Ignoring this step may cause the potstickers to puff up as they're cooking, which makes them look like small balloons.

How do you keep dumplings from clumping? ›

Bring a large pot of water to the boil. Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to stop the dumplings sticking together. Carefully drop frozen dumplings into the boiling water.

Are dumplings done when they float to the top? ›

Cover and bring to a vigorous boil. Add roughly one cup of cold water and return to boil while covered. Repeat this step again. The dumplings will be completely cooked and ready when they float on the surface of the boiling water.

How do you know if dumplings are cooked enough? ›

How do you know when dumplings are done? Most recipes will give you a time to cook them—the one I use says 10 minutes without a lid on the pot and then 10 minutes with a lid, so 20 minutes total in simmering soup broth. To test, take one out and open it up—if it's done in the middle, it's done.

How to cook dumplings perfectly? ›

The Two Easiest Ways to Cook: Boiling and Steaming

Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Add as many dumplings as can fit comfortably in a single layer in the pot and cook them until they float. Let them cook an additional two to three minutes. Fish them out with a strainer, drain them, and serve.

How to make dumplings taste better? ›

A pinch of salt seasons the dumplings and enhances the flavors of the other ingredients. Cold butter or margarine is cut into the flour mixture to bind the dry ingredients together. It also keeps the dumplings light and tender. Whole milk helps create a smooth, moist dough.

Why do my dumplings fall apart when I cook them? ›

When cooking the dumplings, keep the pot at a gentle simmer. An aggressive simmer or boiling will break them apart. Keep the heat low and keep your pot covered so that they steam.

How do you make dumplings less dense? ›

Nap time—Give the dumpling batter time to rest before dropping spoonfuls into the stew or soup. This rest time allows the baking powder to activate, resulting in a fluffier dumpling.

How do you keep dumplings soft? ›

As you fold your dumplings, keep them covered with a slightly damp kitchen towel. This prevents the dumplings from drying out (dry skins can split when cooked). Making fresh dumpling wrappers isn't hard when you have Hetty McKinnon to guide you. (But we won't tell if you use store-bought.)

Why are my dumplings not crispy? ›

This is a very common problem when pan frying dumplings, and most likely it is because your pan isn't hot enough. The easiest trick would be to buy a nonstick pan, but for those who don't want to spend the money, try out this test. To make sure your pan is at the correct temperature, try the water droplet test.

What causes dumplings to be chewy? ›

Dumplings are supposed to be chewy! The soup that sinks into them is what gives them the flavor and the added texture. However, if they're too chewy it may mean that you didn't cook them enough. They should be flavorful and creamy.
